Abstract
In recent years there has been a considerable drive in Ireland to develop community-based learning for students. However, it is rare for academics to volunteer on these sites themselves. The involvement of academics on off-campus sites, deemed by universities as 'learning sites' is the sine qua non of further development in this area. This paper will explore the collaboration of a volunteer academic with a community partner where a project in creative writing for people with intellectual disability 'Away with Words' was piloted and developed. The benefits accrued by both partners in the development and application of theory will be described, focusing in particular on how specialist knowledge and practical knowledge on the ground can inform new theories of creativity and learning on the one hand and new practices on the community site on the other hand. The key elements of the collaboration will be outlined to show how community experience and academic theory can intersect meaningfully for both parties.
